Currently... Enjoying the Sunshine

We just came off of Spring Break, which, as it turned out was a bit chilly and a little rainy. But, hey, it was unscheduled days and we were away from home a few days.  We went to Virginia Beach, did a drive-thru tour of Hampton Univ., spent a day in Colonial Williamsburg, and camped out at Great Wolf Lodge.  We also went to Annapolis for a day of advocating on the Maryland budget, particularly funding for schools, and watching a little bit of Senate and House sessions, and as payment for doing educational stuff for the morning, had a delicious lunch at Chick & Ruth's: BiPartisan Crab Soup (crab soup and cream of crab in the same bowl) and crab cake for me.  Now, back to our regularly scheduled program.

Currently...

I am ready for spring to really, for real, come.  I love the flowers blooming and the sun shining and not bundling up in a heavy coat and, of course, the new shoe options the warm weather brings.

I'm doing my taxes. Comment below if you are actually finished - I'll be impressed.

Looking forward to attending my sorority's fashion show to raise money for our scholarship fund. It's such a great time and a fun excuse to don a beautiful spring hat.

Getting back in gear for Girls on the Run. It's been a long, cold, lazy winter. And I can't let these little girls outrun me (again.)  We're about three weeks into the spring season, but the weather's not been great. I think we'll finally get out this week.

Doing my taxes. Did I say that already? Well, as an indie-writer and publisher, I'm doing business taxes, too.

Enjoy the sunshine!

Splashing at Great Wolf Lodge

We finally made it to Great Wolf Lodge! It feels like we're the last family on the east coast to visit this family resort in Williamsburg, Virginia.  It's one of a chain, others located scattered across the U.S. and is fairly popular for family get-aways.

The theme of Great Wolf is all rustic and woodsy, with cute fluffy wolf ears at check-in. There are a number of room options, including a log cabin themed room, with a separate tent-looking area for the kids. We were in a regular family suite (the tent-theme rooms were sold out), which was space-y enough for the six of us, with two beds and a sleep sofa, an in-room coffee maker, microwave, and refrigerator.
  • Tip: you get a wristband which acts as your water park admission, room key (swipe it across the sensor) and room charge card (again, swipe it across the sensor.)  I like this and it was handy not having to carry a wallet in the pool area.

The big attraction is the indoor water-park, which makes it a great middle-of-winter (or when will winter ever end!) mini-vacation.  There's a wave pool, multiple fun slides, one of those scream-inducing vortex/tornado type slides, a water-y playground, lazy river, and a little kids' shallow pool.  And an adults-only whirlpool.  (Is there any better two words at a family resort than "adults only"?)
  • Tip: you have access to the waterpark before you check in and all day when you check-out, so pack the family swimsuits separately for your arrival and have traveling clothes packed separately on your departure

On the lower level is also other entertainment options. There's a 4D video, video games, arcade, and duckpin bowling, all for additional fees of $2-$6 per person.  Our kids spent a few minutes challenging each other in the Time Challenge - a room equipped with a pattern of lights which the kids had to run around and turn off in sequence (think, life-size Simon.)  There's also a few Quest games - the kid gets a magic wand and then sets off to different stations around the lodge. It looked to total almost $50 to play and seemed geared to younger kids, so we got out of having to do that ($50 for 4 kids adds up.)
  • Tip: Have a plan and a budget. You know how quick $2/kid/game can add up. You can get a point card to load your points, so that's a good way to limit your spending.

We didn't eat in the lodge, but I did get coffee from Dunkin' Donuts! I think this was the first hotel I've stayed in with a Dunkin' Donuts and I was kinda happy. Although there was a long line, as folks were picking up donuts and breakfast, too.  We also got ice cream and fudge from the sweets shop, even before breakfast - you know that's a sign of spring break.

We were only there one night, but it was a full stay.  If we had a lower rate, we may have stayed another night.  We're on Spring Break this week and it seems like everyone else is, too, thus, the higher prices.
  • Tip: Prices, like most travel destinations, vary depending on season and demand, so if you're flexible, you can get a better rate.
The kids had a great time and I'm glad we finally checked this off the family to-do-one-day list. I could see us heading back on another mid-winter/will winter ever end get-away.

It's Not a Vacation 'Til You See Water

Any chance I get, I love a stop at the ocean. That vast water and sky helps to put life into perspective. And its beautiful.
Our first stop for spring break has been Viriginia Beach. It's not really bathing suit weather, though there were folks trying to soak in the cold sunlight.  Even in jeans and long sleeves, I was cold, but it was a wonderfully, sunny day and you can't pass up chances to get your feet in the sand.
We rented a tandem bike and rode up and down the boardwalk. Good thing it wasn't too crowded, since my kids apparently aren't the best co-drivers. Hard to believe, all our beach visits, this was our first bike rental.
On our way to the beach, we also squeezed in a college visit drive-thru tour at Hampton University. With a high school sophomore, college apps around the corner, so we want to get at least an idea of colleges.
It was a good start for the spring break week.

Currently...Springing Forward to Birthdays, My Own Space & Spring Break

Spring forward or fall back - it doesn't matter - I'm thrown off for days trying to figure out what time it is, remembering whether I adjusted this clock or not, and whether I should have another cup of coffee or a glass of wine (such decisions!)

Add that to a whirlwind of weekend activities, running back-to-back and on top of each other, after two no-school snow days and I'm totally out of whack today.  Oh - and I picked up sugar-free coffee creamer.

But the weather seems nice out and I'm in a kinda good mood.  I've got a few projects going on, all of which I need to wrap up in the next two weeks (thus, more coffee, less wine, even less mojitos.)    Other than those, there's a few another things I'm currently working on.

Baby blankets and baby hats.  Still have baby blankets to finish and/or deliver for my pregnant friends.  With this cold snap, I've also added hats to the list because I hate to see a baby outside without a hat.  I've also considered making preemie hats because I have so many little bits of yarn.  That's on my to-do list, but if you know of an organization that needs preemie hats, let me know. That'll get me stitching.

Organizing and decorating my space. A year or so ago, I took over the kids' playroom as my work space.  It still doesn't feel cozy to me, yet. Right now it's functional (sometimes, when it's not a mess), but not "me."  Which I'm not really sure yet what that is since I've not lived alone and had my "own" space since I was in grad school, when it was just me and my dog (not my current dog, another black Cocker Spaniel).  I'm collecting ideas - where else? On Pinterest in "a room of my own."

Planning a Sweet 16. I'm kinda nervous about this. Okay, maybe more about my first child turning 16! than the actual party, although thinking about 50 teens in my house is making me a bit anxious, too.  I'm overwhelmed by all the stuff I still need to teach her (she still doesn't even sort her laundry properly or know how to put on eyeliner) and the limited amount of time before she heads off into the big blue world (of which I'm reminded by the mountain of college info that is stuffed in the mailbox).   And if she turns 16, that means, Lord willing, the next one will too and then the next and then the next. And where will that leave me?  Oh, yeah - on a beach in the Caribbean with an umbrella drink.  (Think positive!)

Thinking about spring break.  It'll be here before we know it and I really really don't want to be near my house when it comes. How far can I drive in a week or maybe we can get on a plane.  What great spring break plans are out there?

Trying to figure out what home project my husband has going on in the basement. You know when your spouse makes multiple trips to Home Depot and you hear sawing and drilling and smell sawdust?  I just stay out of the way.  We could have a built-in pool or a basketball court by the time he's done. Who knows.

Now, let me get back to trying to fix up this coffee. I've got stuff to do.

Currently... Easing back into Regular Life Again

We just came back from a week of spring break. We didn't do much and I'm glad about that - I was so looking forward to doing nothing.  There were a few highlights. Hubby and I went to NYC to see Raisin in the Sun, (Denzel Washington, great play, and a great date) then we spent the rest of the week at the beach with the kids.  It was too cold to go anywhere near the water - I love the beach, but have really had enough of the cold.  We went to the movies (Captain America & Rio2), ate ice cream, and went swimming.  I caught up on reading, almost finished a crocheted shawl, and started a knitted scarf (because why wait 'til a project is finished to start a new one.)  We finished up the week with early church service and a delicious Easter dinner. And of course, dying eggs and the Easter egg hunt.  Whew.  Now what am I up to? Easing my way back into our regular life, while at the same time preparing for a month of a whirlwind of activities.

Laundry, laundry & more laundry. Washing, folding, and putting away everything in the suitcases. I have however, come up with a packing system that makes this a little easier. Packing for the return home, I put all the dirty clothes in one suitcase and any remaining clean clothes in another. When I get home, I can just drag the dirty clothes suitcase to the washing machine and put away everything in the other.

Making Chocolate Overnight Oats for a busy week.  Even if you think you don't like oatmeal (like me), these are yummy, filling, portable breakfasts: layers of Greek yogurt, mixed with chocolate powder, oatmeal, strawberries, and nuts.   I made one when I was testing out the recipe for Food52; next morning, threw it in my bag to go to my daughter's basketball game.  Perfect on-the-go breakfast.

Packing - or at least thinking about packing - for the sorority conference I'll be heading to on this weekend. This year, I celebrate  the 25th year of my membership, our "Silver" year and I'm quite excited!

Catching up on all the organization stuff - PTA and my sorority - I didn't do over the break because I purposely let myself not do stuff and rest.

Working out.  Again.  2 words: skirt season. Oh, wait, 2 more: short sleeves.

What are you up to this week?

Spring Break is for Doing Nothing

Ahh... Spring break! The official official end to winter. The last big break for school children to gear up for the last lap of the school year. One more quarter, that's really like a crazy mix of really hard (finals) and really easy (outdoor recess) and all the excitement of only 30-some days 'til the end of school. That countdown starts with spring break.

So how are you spending spring break? We parents feel like we have to make big plans for spring break because someone warned us we only get 18 springs with our children before they go off to their adult life, never to spend a sunny day with us again. So its gotta be grand and wonderful and memorable and scrapbook-worthy and Facebook-postable. The pressure!

For the past few years, our plans have consisted of packing up the car with basketballs, books, yarn, games & bathing suits and heading to the beach, which is really too cold for swimming and on some days, even too cold for sitting in the sand enjoying the sun, but it doesn't matter. What do they say, "a cold day at the beach is better than a cold day at home"? Or something like that.

We don't really "do" anything for spring break and I like it that way. Half the fun is just the change of scenery. Getting up in the morning for a run and heading down a different path than the one we usually take. Not checking the schedule for the next place we have to rush off to. Not even driving anywhere, but walking to dinner and to Rita's for dessert. Staying up and watching movies and bad TV because we have nowhere to go in the morning. Falling asleep on the couch or in the floor in the middle of the day or late at night. Having a conversation face-to-face, not looking at each other in the rearview mirror. My kids the other day were excitedly jabbering about whether a new SweetFrogs would be opening for the break. I think they're planning on eating frozen yogurt for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and dessert. And yeah, I think I'll have a cup or two, also.

What are you doing for spring break? I hope you get a chance to do nothing, too.

Spring into Reading Book Giveaway

The best time to read, I find, is when my agenda is empty.  This is usually on vacation.  If you’re like me, a new read is a required part of your vacation packing list. Whether a weekend getaway or a month’s venture, you’ve got a book stashed in your bag or an ebook file stored on your favorite gadget. Moving into spring, I’m sharing some of the books from my pile.

Spring into Reading Book Giveaway!
Get ready for spring break with a new book. Chosen by me, a surprise to you – if chosen, you will receive one book from my shelves.  All are promotional copied from publishers and authors.  Some I’ve read, some I haven’t, I liked this one, but not that one (not my genre of choice, usually.)  No cost to enter.  There will be as many winners as books I pull from the shelves (minimum 6), each person may only win 1 book.

Enter the giveaway, winners will be announced on Thursday, April 10 on my Facebook page. Note, winners will need to provide their mailing address upon notification.

Currently...Looking forward to Spring!

I was up late, finishing reading "On The Come Up," thus now benefitting from the full pot of coffee as I go through my to-do list for the day.  What else am I currently up to?

Watching... the sky for the forecasted snow - tomorrow! Can you believe it? More snow, post-vernal equinox. Is that really allowed?

Shopping for... silver shoes and dresses to celebrate my upcoming 25th anniversary in my sorority.  Doesn't it always seem impossible to find the perfect dress when you need it? Any other time, there's great silver shoes all over the place. What milestones or special events are you celebrating?

Planning... spring break. It's coming soon and we're debating on a way down south where it's warm trip (and thinking about the price of 6 airplane tickets), a road trip (but anywhere far & drivable is still cold), or a relaxing, low-frills eastern shore trip (a couple hours drive & we can take the dog).  In the meantime, I'm piling up books to read and a crochet project.

Selling... the last of these Girl Scout cookies! Do-Si-Dos anyone? Whatever's left, I can always bake into these yummy brownies.

Hoping... that the DC Police or somebody find this missing 8-year old girl, alive and well.  And that someone have a serious sit-down with her mother about grown men who befriend your daughter and offer to let them stay at their home, without you.  And that this be a lesson to other mothers who don't see the blaring, flashing red flags when a grown man you barely know brings your young child gifts. It's a scary thought, I know, that you can't accept everyone's generosity at face value as genuine and sincere. Unfortunately, there are sick people out there who prey on the defenseless and vulnerable. It is our duty as parents to protect our children, even if that means being a little over-protective sometimes.

What are you currently up to?

What I did over Spring Break

Nothing.  For the past week, I have done, for the most part, nothing.  And it was great.

I had a meeting to go to, I think I was on a conference call at some point, and I worked on Election Day.  Other than that, nothing.  Then we went to the beach and did nothing there, either.

I took a moment to take a picture of this tree on an industrious morning.
We slept in, ate breakfast around 11.  The kids played outside a bit - basketball, rollerskating, riding their bikes.  I think one of the kids went swimming one day.  Someone got a new bike, someone checked books out of the library.  I started reading The Global Achievement Gap and The Weird Sisters (2 separate books, more on them later), still waiting for one of my girls to give me The Hunger Games back. I wrote a little bit.  Crocheted a little bit - almost done my poncho/shawl thing.  We ate out more than I prefer - can get a little expensive for a family of 6 - and the kids didn't do as much academic practice as I would like.   We enjoyed home-made beignets and experimented with making funnel cake.  I cooked Easter dinner.

There was a lot of other stuff we could've done.  On a good day, I've got a good laundry list of things to do around the area, day trips, craft projects, and educational activities.  But we didn't do any of it.  I think my kids have enjoyed their break, they haven't complained about not going to a museum, although they have asked to go to the movies.  And before the break, my oldest asked me to please not sign her up for camp because she didn't want to wake up early and that would take up her whole week of doing nothing.

If you've ever read any other of my posts, you may have picked up on the fact that we have a busy schedule.  So a week of hanging around doing nothing, has been good.  And now we get back to our regularly scheduled school - homework - Girl Scout meetings - swim practice - TaeKwanDo lessons - basketball practice - chorus/play rehearsal - tennis lesson - PTA meetings - a hot meal would be nice life.

(and Congrats! to my friend & her hubby who welcomed their new baby to the world on yesterday - enjoy this time while he just eats & sleeps & poops.  Before you know it, you'll be wheeling that stroller, hurrying off to art class and French lessons!)
